PHAETHON CoE had the privilege to host a milestone Joint Workshop organised by EUREC – The Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centres and the EERA – The European Energy Research Alliance Joint Programme on Smart Grids (JP SG) last week.
The Workshop brought together high-level stakeholders across government, academia, and industry, including key representatives from various Cyprus Ministries, the local Regulatory Authority and System Operators, as well as the leadership and valued members from EUREC and EERA – under one roof at the University of Cyprus.
The event delivered two compelling workshops, which took place over the course of the day on 21 May 2025, featuring insightful keynote speeches, presentations, and panel discussions.
- First Workshop | Title: Achieving the 2030 targets in line with the long-term strategic objectives of the energy transition that capture the aspirations of the Green Deal and REPowerEU: What it means to island Cyprus using the experience of more mature markets?
- Second Workshop | Title: The Terawatt era of RES and the vital contribution of flexibility for preserving security of supply.
Moreover, the Joint Workshop presented the ideal forum during which to officially release the EERA JP SG White Paper on “The Crucial Role of Smart Grids for the Success of the Clean Energy Transition”, which was presented by Mattia Cabiati, Venizelos Efthymiou and Kari Mäki.
A massive thank you to our valued partners, represented by the President of EUREC Wolfram Sparber and the Chair of EERA JP SG Luciano Martini, for their trust and inspiring partnership, as well as to our very own Venizelos Efthymiou, for his pivotal role in both shaping and making this event possible.
A special thanks to the EUREC Operations Manager Rafaela Araújo and the EERA JP SG Manager Margherita Menon for their incredible input and amazing cooperation in the lead up to and during the event.
A warm thanks also goes out to all the speakers, attendees, and contributors for making this event a consequential chapter in the Energy Transition underway.
