Job Overview

This position is part of the established strategic partnerships of the PHAETHON CoE with both the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the University of Groningen. Thus, the selected candidate(s) will have the opportunity to collaborate with the two institutions. This a great opportunity to gain valuable experiences for scientific purposes and expand their network. The Researcher – Established Researcher (R3) is an experienced researcher who has demonstrated research independence and leadership within their field. At PHAETHON CoE, the R3 researcher leads significant components of research projects, drives scientific innovation, and contributes to the Centre’s strategic research objectives. This role includes developing project concepts, supervising junior staff, building collaborations, and securing competitive research funding. The Established Researcher is expected to shape the scientific direction of their research area and contribute to the Centre’s impact on energy sustainability, innovation, and policy.

Reporting

The Established Researcher reports to the Research Unit Leader or Group Leader and collaborates closely with other researchers, project managers, engineers, and partner institutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead independent and collaborative research activities aligned with the CoE’s scientific mission.
  • Identify research problems and propose innovative approaches and solutions.
  • Design and lead the implementation of work packages within national or European funded research projects.
  • Publish as lead author in high-impact scientific journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Mentor and supervise early-career researchers (R1/R2) and MSc/PhD students.
  • Participate in strategic planning of research directions within the Research Unit and Centre-wide initiatives.
  • Contribute to proposal development and the acquisition of competitive funding (e.g. Horizon Europe, national calls).
  • Engage in stakeholder collaboration, interdisciplinary initiatives, and outreach/dissemination activities.
  • Promote and apply best practices in research ethics, data management, and open science.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research outcomes and educational activities.
  • Contribute to the development of educational programmes related to the research activities of the lab.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in in any field of Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences or any other related field with a grade of at least a 2.1 class or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of postdoctoral research experience or equivalent academic/industry experience.
  • Proven track record of independent research and project coordination.
  • Strong portfolio of peer-reviewed publications and contributions to knowledge advancement.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring junior researchers or students.
  • Familiarity with national and EU research funding programmes and proposal writing.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and team collaboration skills.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written); knowledge of Greek is an asset.

Employment Terms

Initially, a one-year contract will be offered, with a 6-month probation period, which is renewable based on performance. The monthly gross salary for full-time employment is in the range of €3000 – €4200. From this amount, employee contributions to the Cyprus government funds will be deducted. Maternity leave will be granted based on Maternity Protection Law 1997(Ν.100(Ι)/1997), and the existing amendment laws. The 13th salary is incorporated in the monthly salary. Ideally, the position will be combined with an application for a PhD at the University of Cyprus, with the subject of the doctoral thesis being related to the research work conducted.
