The Infrastructure & Engineering Director is responsible for the planning, development, management, and continuous improvement of the PHAETHON CoE’s research infrastructure, engineering operations, and laboratory environments. The role ensures that all physical and technological assets are aligned with the Centre’s strategic goals in energy research and innovation.

Reporting

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Infrastructure & Engineering Director ensures operational readiness, safety, scalability, and sustainability of the Centre’s infrastructure, while supporting high-level engineering consulting services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and lead the Infrastructure & Engineering strategy of PHAETHON CoE, while establishing and leading the department, overseeing a portfolio of infrastructure and engineering projects, and ensuring strong performance and long-term sustainability.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to management on infrastructure development, laboratory expansion, and capital equipment investments.
  • Plan and oversee the design, development, and management of research facilities, laboratories, and infrastructure.
  • Ensure efficient operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of all infrastructure assets, maintaining high availability, reliability, and performance.
  • Maximize the utilization of infrastructure and equipment across projects, research teams, and external collaborations.
  • Develop and manage the departmental budget, including financial planning, cost optimisation, resource allocation, and performance monitoring.
  • Develop and maintain a pipeline of infrastructure and engineering initiatives, including externally funded projects, to support the sustainable growth of the department.
  • Lead and coordinate engineering and technical teams to deliver high-quality engineering services, testing, and consulting activities.
  • Support proposal preparation and contribute to securing external funding for infrastructure development and large-scale facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, environmental, and EU / national regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in infrastructure management, engineering leadership, or technical operations.
  • Proven experience in strategic infrastructure planning, laboratory or facility development, and equipment lifecycle management.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management, capital investment planning, and resource optimisation.
  • Excellent command of English language (written and spoken)

Additional Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of research infrastructure environments (academic, R&D, or innovation centres).
  • Excellent leadership, coordination, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with researchers, engineers, and administrative staff.
  • Strong knowledge of safety standards, environmental compliance, and sustainability practices.
  • Fluency in Greek language will be considered as an advantage

Employment Terms

Two (2) year full-time employment contract will be offered, including a six (6) month probation period, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability. Employment will be governed by the applicable institutional policies and Cyprus labour legislation. Statutory leave entitlements, including maternity leave, will be granted in accordance with the Maternity Protection Law of 1997 (Ν.100(I)/1997) and its subsequent amendments.
