PHAETHON CoE invites highly motivated early-stage researchers wishing to pursue doctoral studies and contribute to cutting-edge research in Smart Grids. The successful candidate will join an international and multidisciplinary research environment, contributing to the development of innovative solutions supporting future intelligent and sustainable energy systems.
Successful candidates will:
- Be enrolled as full-time PhD students at the University of Cyprus.
- Conduct research within a Research Unit of PHAETHON CoE.
- Have the possibility of joint or co-supervised PhD arrangements with the Technical University of Denmark and/or the University of Groningen (subject to eligibility and institutional approval).
- Participate in international collaborations, mobility periods, and research secondments.
Research Areas
Candidates are encouraged to apply if their research expertise focuses on smart grids, with interests in advanced grid operation and control, optimized power flows, future power system modelling, and next-generation grid-flexible energy technologies.
What the PhD Covers
The fully funded PhD includes:
- Monthly financial support within the range of €1,500–€2,500 gross.
- Coverage of PhD tuition fees.
- Research support and access to state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure.
- Opportunities for funded mobility and research visits to Technical University of Denmark and/or University of Groningen.
- Participation in international conferences and scientific training.

Required Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Hold a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering,, Computer Engineering or a closely related field.
- Demonstrate strong academic performance.
- Show clear motivation for doctoral research.
- Possess analytical thinking and research skills.
- Have excellent command of English.
Conditional Offer
The award of the PHAETHON PhD is strictly conditional upon the candidate’s formal admission to a PhD programme at the University of Cyprus (UCY).
Selected candidates must submit a separate application to the relevant UCY PhD position, which is officially advertised and administered through the UCY Graduate School (https://www.ucy.ac.cy/graduateschool/), and must satisfy all academic admission requirements set by the respective Department.
The successful candidate is expected to commence the PhD programme during the January intake period; therefore, applicants must ensure that they submit their application to the relevant University of Cyprus PhD programme within the corresponding UCY application window and comply with all applicable deadlines and admission requirements.
The PHAETHON PhD Studentship will be activated only upon official confirmation of admission and enrolment as a UCY PhD student.
