Inaugural PHAETHON Energy Day Delves into the Future of Electric Vehicles in Cyprus

The new initiative aims to drive discussion on the technological, regulatory, and societal dimensions of the critical energy transformation

On 27 November 2025, the PHAETHON Centre of Excellence at the University of Cyprus marked the launch of the PHAETHON Energy Days, a new series of thematic workshops aimed at fostering dialogue on key energy and sustainability issues.

The inaugural workshop, “Electric Vehicles in Cyprus: Where We Are and the Road Ahead”, assembled experts, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to examine and shape the accelerating shift to electromobility on the island.

Highlights of the workshop included:

  • Insightful Keynote: Dr Henrik Bindner from DTU – Technical University of Denmark shared lessons from Denmark’s experience in system flexibility and the role of electric vehicles in energy innovation.
  • Cutting-Edge Research: Michael Toumbas from EV Power Ltd presented ePowerMove – Horizon Europe, a project advancing smart, low-cost, bi-directional EV charging solutions.
  • Networking: Participants engaged in dynamic conversations on the future of electromobility in Cyprus, strengthening collaboration across sectors.
  • Roundtable Discussion: Moderated by Dr Venizelos Efthymiou (PHAETHON CoE), the panel featured:
    • Giorgos Nikolaou (Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works)
    • Alexandros Stylianides (Energy Service, Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry)
    • Andreas Kyprianou (Electricity Authority of Cyprus, DSO)
    • Dinos Lefkaritis Jr. (Chairman, Association of Electric Vehicle Companies and Professionals, ΣΕΕΗ)
    • Michael Toumbas (EV Power Ltd)

The panel delved into Cyprus’s current EV infrastructure, exploring both the challenges and the prospects ahead.

Key Outcomes:

  • Outcome 1: The productive dialogue of the stakeholders of Cyprus, including the Association of Electric Vehicle Companies and Professionals (ΣΕΕΗ) with representatives of the ministries of a) Transport, Communications and Works, and b) Energy, Commerce and Industry, has underlined the importance of close collaboration between them for speeding up the transition to the world of eMobility with the overwhelming benefits underlined during the event.
  • Outcome 2: The in-depth discussion of the inherent services that eMobility offers to end users, through the direct connection to the grid, and validated through the ePowerMove Horizon Europe project, are expected to have a direct financial reward to the owners through the flexibility that they can offer to the electricity system and users.
  • Outcome 3: The Energy Day as planned and delivered, covering a theme of wide interest and impact, has proved instrumental in alerting about the governing issues calling for collective action. The event as such, acted as the platform to initiate collaborative actions that are needed for speeding up adaptions that were rather blurred before the event.

The PHAETHON Energy Days aim to continue stimulating dialogue on clean energy transitions for the betterment of Cyprus and beyond, bringing together key stakeholders to explore technological, regulatory, and societal dimensions of the pivotal energy transformation.

This event was made possible with the financial support of the Hydrocarbon Service of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry.
