The First Stage Researcher (R1) position is intended for early-career researchers who are at the beginning of their research career and typically hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing research activities under the supervision of senior researchers. The position may also serve as a pathway toward doctoral studies (PhD) and progression to the Recognised Researcher (R2) level.

The role offers the opportunity to gain research experience in areas such as renewable energy, smart grids, and energy analytics, while developing core research skills within an international and multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research activities under senior supervision
  • Perform modelling, data analysis, and experimental validation
  • Participate in lab testing, pilot installations, or fieldwork
  • Contribute to scientific publications and technical reports
  • Support preparation of research proposals

Career Development

  • Supported enrolment in a PhD programme at the University of Cyprus
  • Collaboration, mobility opportunities, or joint PhD programmes with DTU and the University of Groningen.
  • Mentorship by senior researchers
  • Progression pathway to Recognised Researcher (R2)
  • Participation in National or European research networks

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, or related field
  • Strong academic performance
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)

Desirable Skills

The following will be considered an advantage but are not mandatory:

  • Energy–field prior experience (e.g. renewable energy systems, battery energy storage, smart grids, power systems, green hydrogen).
  • Programming language expertise (e.g. Python)
  • Participation in research projects
  • Knowledge of Greek is an advantage but not mandatory

Employment Conditions

  • Initial contract: 1 year, renewable based on performance
  • Full-time position (residency in Cyprus is required)
  • Annual gross salary: €18,000–€30,000 (depending on qualifications and experience)
  • 13th salary
  • 21 days of paid annual leave
  • Flexible working hours

Employee contributions to Cyprus statutory funds will be deducted from the gross salary in accordance with national legislation. Maternity leave will be granted in accordance with the Maternity Protection Law of 1997 (Ν.100(I)/1997), as amended.
